Post-production Update for our Film Pera-perahang Lata

April 7th, 2008 by riannehill

To update everyone, I have just finished the offline editing and we are about to work on the sound requirements for the film. It took quite a while as I had to schedule it within the busy work days for a number of productions I’ve been working at. I did the whole editing work. :) While my sound engineer and musical scorer will be the one hands on with the sound requirements, I’m going to manually edit the EDL file of the offline edit at FCP by putting the correct time code in’s and outs’ for every shot for the whole film. Yes, that’s a little tedious but it’s the best option I have given my available resources.

I edited the offline of the film using a Macbook Pro with the downconverted footages from the HD tapes transferred to mini DV tapes with superimposed time codes on the visuals to help me out with the preps for the online editing. And since this is the best option laid down for my resources as approved by Engine Room (I have no available files from the mini DV tapes as it couldn’t keep such needed files in the said format; a betacam SP tape could, but I need resources for a betacam SP player to capture the footages using firewire connection to the Macbook Pro - which I don’t have, and it would entail great cost if I push through with it) to keep up with the right EDL file which shall serve as the “cut list” of the film for online editing (it’s like having a cut list for a film then the negative matcher will follow the said list to come up with the matched negative ready for printing). On this note, I will produce the EDL file from FCP (which will turn out to be a text file in a certain format with the needed information for online editing), then edit the part of the time codes since the ones determined during digitizing are not accurate anymore from what the mini DV tapes could offer, put the correct time code in and time code out for each shot for the whole film - along with this, I also have to transfer the edited elements to 1-2 tracks only (ideally 1 track, and the 2 tracks would be for parts with such transitions/effects as superimpositions and cross dissolves which shall only be possible with at most 2 tracks) at the timeline of FCP (as an EDL produced is in a per track basis). After which, I shall provide the EDL file and the master DVCPRO HD tapes of the rushes and the overcranked shots to Optima for the online editing.

In between, the additional dubbing for certain lines, foley, sound effects, musical scoring, music lay-in, and sound mixing shall be done at Hit Productions. Most likely, I shall also give a copy of the EDL with specifications for the audio to help out the sound engineer to doublecheck the source files from the DVD of the master WAV files of the sound elements - the file name shall appear at every event (every shot) provided by the EDL file and will guide the sound engineer in cases that he would opt to use the master files from the DVD of all the sound elements, primarily the live sound elements, than the originally provided sound elements from the offline edit.

The colorgrading will be done at Optima. And after this, the mixed audio from Hit shall be laid in to prior to the release of the final cut of the film.

The film shall have two versions: one in HD and one in SD. The HD copy will have a master in a DVCPRO HD tape. I still have to inquire about the possibility of an HD copy in digibeta. Otherwise, the masters in digibeta, betacam sp, mini DV, and DVD shall be produced in SD. I am yet to inquire about the blu-ray disc if it’s already possible for me to have a master in HD using a blu-ray disc in preparation for what the future has in stored for the said medium being greatly considered as the next generation DVD.

About the possibility of blowing up the film to 35mm, we’re still going to explore options. Of course, who wouldn’t want a 35mm film print right? Considerably, it has more venues in a number of theaters and festivals and more possibilities of being projected in a theater as a film to be shown prior to, say, a full-length feature (my first two films had such invitations being a film preceding a full-length feature for some film festivals requiring a print instead of a digital copy) - and I really had good venues with the 35mm prints of my first two shorts. But looking into the practical side of things, there are a number of great venues still for the digital format. All in all, it will really be dependent on what resources can be made available for the film. It’s good to know that whether I’ll have a print during the premiere of the film or I’ll have a DVD to be projected in the big screen with the best possible resolution it can offer, I shall have an HD copy in DVCPRO HD tape which shall be ready for blowing up to 35mm some other time in the future. :) Yay.

Anyone with ideas and suggestions that could help us with post-production (primarily in terms of the availability and future of blu-ray, digibeta, and blowing up from HD to 35mm), you may get in touch with me through here or at svelte_rianne@yahoo.com. We will really appreciate all the help that you can offer. Thank you so much!

Anilao_gc_front_2 Last sept, i was invited at the IMAX, SM Mall of Asia to watch Deep Sea
3D. I invited Von, my lead actor for my newest film Pera-perahang Lata.
Well, looks like he’s my lucky charm that night. Coz of the countless
events and raffles and film screenings i have attended, this is the

I won a GC to anilao! it’s a day pass, but well, it’s ok, it’s free beach!!! :D yay!

And so, we went to Anilao, my first time there! Then we went to Tali Beach after. They are both in Batangas, but tell you what, theyre on the opposite ends! haha! like more than 70 km. away from each other! twas 2-hour drive from Anilao to Nasugbu where Tali Beach is!

If you notice in the pix, I wore the same clothes in Anilao and Tali, but mind you, nilabhan naman yan! wehehe! but yeah, it’s mainly because I went to Anilao then went to Tali! Oh, and one more thing, belated happy bday to Miguel!!! =p

We need DVCPRO HD Tapes!!!

September 29th, 2007 by riannehill

Hi! Would anyone know where we can buy DVCPRO HD tapes at affordable
rates? So far, we’re getting them at Php 4,400 each. We’re hoping that
we can get them at more budget-friendly retail rates (mga tipong 5
we can ask saan sila nakakabili. You can email svelte_rianne@

Characters for the Auditions:

Nilo
24-year old struggling, introvert, and critical man and breadwinner of the family (his mother and two siblings) who travels his way going to work and back home everyday and sees through the different people inside the jeep and the different sights along the highways.

Gary
Nilo’s good friend and co-worker. In his late 20’s, medium built, a jester and an extrovert type. The struggling Manila-born Gary comes from a big family of 8 children (the 5th child of the family). He is a very family-oriented guy who serves as a principled comic jester of the family and his co-workers.

Juda
The large-built Juda is the arrogant substitute to the permanent supervisor of the factory who is under maternity leave. The egotistic attitude of this bully-type man becomes the root of fight inside the factory.

Adult beggar
The adult beggar who was given alms by Nilo that morning turns out to be a beggar, and at the same time, an alcoholic and addict, a parasite of the society.

Mae
Nilo’s 8-year old sister who has a very cute voice on the phone. Makulit and active type, she calls her kuya to ask for money for the exchange gift.

Nilo’s mother
Nilo’s sickly, quite melodramatic mother

Gary’s mother
A longing mother full of hurting moments for her son.

Gary’s father
A longing father full of grief.

Gary’s sister
Gary’s sister who calms her mother during her lowest point.

Beggar boy
The beggar boy who desperately asks for alms or food to Nilo for his starving and dying mother.  His painstakingly harsh condition puts guilt on Nilo upon seeing one shocking moment.

Beggar mother
The beggar boy’s sick and starving mother.

Boss
The firm boss whose voice reverberates in the whole place when making his speech, but at the latter part, it turns out he has some loose and comic side, too.

Boss’ wife
The boss’ stern, quite bulky, and all dressed up wife who turns out to have some loose and comic side, too.

Carinderia owner
The Filipina-Chinese owner of the newly-opened carinderia near the factory where Nilo works.

Pare 1 and Pare 2
Two middle-aged men wearing the typical pambahay clothes. They are seriously discussing the state of the Philippines inside the jeep as if they are intellectuals (but each of them turns out more comic than intellectual).

Drunk maniac
The drunk maniac who tries to take advantage of a woman beside Nilo while inside the jeep.

Snatcher
The snatcher who robs the purse of the woman with umbrella (the woman who also became the victim of the maniac inside the jeep Nilo rides).

Policeman
The policeman who interviews the father of the murdered guy during his wake.

URGENT: We need help for our locations for a new film (factory, church, funeraria, lower-middle class apartment) to be shot on September

August 3rd, 2007 by riannehill

Good day/evening! In line with the new independent short
film (a film grant from the National Commission for Culture and the
Arts) we are shooting on Sept. 2, 2007 and December 2007, I would like
to ask your help in getting the right locations for the film. Due to
certain turn of events, we are officially starting pre-prod today and
we have less than a month for pre-prod in order to shoot the film. And
so, we are seeking your help and suggestions for the following
locations that we need:

- A
small-, medium- or large-scale factory (within the vicinity of Metro
Manila) that is primarily manufacturing such products as

milk or soda or any other canned
goods.

-
A cinematic church or chapel with a grand opening of the Simbang Gabi
this coming Dec. 16 (if possible, if we can also get the

contact person and contact numbers of maybe the parish priest and administrative people of the church so we can further
  discuss our plans and intentions)
- A lower-middle class small house where we can shoot a “burol” scene inside the house and extend the seats and giving of
“tong,” etc. outside the house. If anybody can help as in getting the art requirements for a “burol” scene as well like a

funeraria where we can rent a coffin, some lights, and the rest of the
stuff we normally seen during a “burol,” and maybe flowers

too, we would gladly appreciate these things really.
- An apartment with a window and door beside each other and the window showing the outside of the apartment

If you have any idea for these locations that we need, or maybe you own any of these, kindly email at svelte_rianne@yahoo.com or text at 0920-9273651
so that we can discuss the possibilities of getting your place as
location. We would really appreciate your suggestions. We are paying
the locations and we will fix the permits needed, but we hope that you
would understand that we cannot provide the commercial rates that
others get for a TV commercial, mainstream film, or a TV production. We
are allotting a budget for our locations, but it wouldn’t be as high as
the likes of getting a location for an advertising project. With
regards to the factory, and if it’s okay, with the church location,
possible x-deals and media mileage can be something to consider as well
upon further discussion of such possibilities. We really need these
locations “super-urgent.” Thank you very much for your time!

Sincerely,
Rianne Hill Soriano

surprise-filled googling

July 7th, 2007 by riannehill

i have been googling lots of stuff for many things, mainly for my new upcoming short film. i was googling some stuff about philippine architecture, factories, schools, etc. and i bumped into the PRC website, and to my surprise, i saw somebody…

well, i have a bf now, but i dont think theres anything wrong about this… :) i saw on the list of topnotchers for the board exams of architecture, i think 8th place, was christian rayle ___, my x-bf, to put it better, my very first bf. sweet! im so thrilled for his success! i remembered during our first year high, well, we both wanted to be an architect (well for me i wanted lots of things way back, i was 13 years old back then! i wanted to take archi, interior design, chemical engineering, creative writing, broadcast comm, journalism, international studies, photography, among others. so many!!!!!). yeah, we became together when we were both in first year HS, 1 classroom wall difference and we met through a common friend back then. we were even competing in poster making contests and quiz bees in school - representing our sections/classes! and look now, he really wanted to be an architect ever since, and he wanted to enter UST. and he did it! and he even topped the board exams! it’s such a nice feeling to know that some people really do make their dreams come true!!!

we ended up pretty good even though we separated ways after around 7 mos. i think. we used to have communication as friends until around my senior year in college, but well, we lost contacts due to cellphones changing alright. oh well, in any case, im happy for him. i dont even know how to contact him, but in case he bumps into this in whatever twist of fate, i want to tell him, "im so thrilled for your success and ill always be a friend to you wherever you are, youve always been a part of my past that i do treasure :) congrats to ya and hope your doin great wherever you are!"

Ang hirap at sarap ng freelance.

May 29th, 2007 by riannehill

Malaya. Mas nakakaenhance ng creative skills. Mas na-mamanage mo ang time mo. So kelangan kumayod at rumaket to the max.

Matagal-tagal din kong di nakapag-blog. Oo ngarag, to the point I went to the ER of Medical City last Sat due to stress. At oo, eto nga’t im seeking the therapeutic powers of blogging once again.

Pagdating sa opportunities, topsy-turvy. Mahirap talaga.

Ayuz yung raket dito, raket dun, you meet new people on the way. You learn many things on the way. Come on. But who am I, a poor struggler of the world… against the big names…

At may risk pa na baka walang tukain pag di kumayod to the max. Coz im doin my part amidst the lack of financial assurance. But when you demand things on me to drive on, to get to your desired destination, you should also deliver the right fuel for me to move – especially you are claiming that my initiatives would just fall in deaf ears and you should be the one to work it out for me.

If you get to read this, I know you know who you are. I ain’t gonna speak to confirm anything. Besides, we’re intelligent people, no need for that. Nuff said on this blog.

Pero wait, the issue goes back to the beginning… money??

I need a break. And I need money.

Punta na lang muna ko ng Hollywood. So far, in my dreams first. Hehe!
